In today’s economy, a lot of new graduates are debating on whether they should go back to school. Jobs are definitely harder to come by these days and some believe that after a few years the market should pick back up. I too have contemplated going back to school for my Master’s, but since my career continues to progress, I’ve decided to hold off on it. In the grand scheme of things, now is a great time for new grads struggling with job placement to go back to school. Not only will they be able to hold off paying back loans, but also situate themselves for opportunities, now and in the future.

One common misconception many of us believed while still in college was that a degree automatically meant job placement. We’ve come to find out that this is not the case and with more graduates entering the job market, competition is stiff. Why bring this up? Because those who go back to school should know what they want to do when they graduate. Start by making connections immediately and/or build from the ones you created before. Participate in internships, conferences, summits, careers fairs and more. Through each of these avenues, you will be able to network and meet with future employers, co-workers and possible partners. Create organizations, non-profits and partner with local community leaders in the same field you are thinking about working in. Look at school as the practice field for real life. Although, I’m currently not a grad student, I know plenty who are active in their schools and programs. At this level, it’s not all about classes and grades, but more about how you utilize your position.

Many of these tactics can be used for undergrads, high schoolers and middle schoolers as well. The more real-world connections you make in school, the easier it will be to find a job once you graduate. Honestly, I wish I would’ve done more in college to standout and connect with professionals. One area I struggled with was not knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I understand many of you feel the same way, but my advice is that you act on whatever you believe in at the moment. Whether it’s an idea for a startup or a student summit, execute your plan and think about recourse later.

As cliche as this may sound, now is the time to capitalize off of school. You are in a unique position to change the world and enhance your career prospects. Taking small steps toward your goal will facilitate you future success.

Thank you for coming to my site. Here's a little introduction as to what you'll be seeing from me in the near future.

I know I’m a little late with the new year post, but January was a pretty busy month for me. From CES in Vegas to my week long trip in Ethiopia, I was barley home. In any case, I’m excited for the future and what lies ahead. That sounds pretty cliche, but I feel like I’ll be embarking on a new chapter in my life and am confident in what I will accomplish.

To preface what you will see on my site I’d like to start by saying that I plan on sharing my knowledge, experience and opinions about the world and what I continue to learn on a daily basis.

The big influences you’ll notice in my future posts will consist of, Social Media, Hip-hop, Strategies to Success, the Development of Africa (Ethiopia) and Creative Ideas I note from time to time. I’ll probably veer off of these topics from time to time, but they will be central in the theme of this site.

Thank you for following me in my future endeavors and I hope you benefit from my writing as much as I will.
