Editor’s Note: In this post I discuss the importance of an “Unsolicited Message” and how effective it can be in pursuing your goals. I refer to message throughout the post, but I want to be clear in that I’m referring to those strictly online (i.e. email, Facebook, Twitter etc…).

Today writing emails, “DM’ing” or sending Facebook messages is almost as common as making a phone call. We live in a society where communicating through the internet is shifting the way in which we interact with one another. Specifically in our education and professional work environments.

In this post I decided to spotlight “Unsolicited Message.” You know, those well-thought out proposals you write to a gatekeeper or employer in your field, hoping they respond with your wish granted. Often times we send unsolicited emails because we feel that the person on the other end of the message will understand our situation and do their best to accommodate our request.

Sometimes this works and other times it doesn’t, but I still encourage people to do it. The simple act of putting your thoughts and goals out into the universe is a small step in accomplishing your goals. Whether they respond or not, you’ve declared what you intend to do.

In the past year, unsolicited emails have granted me amazing job opportunities, luxurious hotel stays and VIP status in some of Hollywood’s most exclusive events. The recurring theme I’ve noticed through each of these opportunities is that they grow from each other. I’ve been able to capitalize off of each email and develop the influential relationship needed to embark on my next request.

In my experience, I’ve found that being sincere honest and respectful to your recipient will yield you the best results. Being persistent is also key in accomplishing your goal. You’ll find many messages go unanswered, but remember all you need is that one response to continue forward.

The reason I emphasize the importance of an unsolicited message is because it is one of the easiest way to get in touch with someone you’ve never met. From Facebook to Twitter, the tools for finding the right person are their. By utilizing these search engines and directories, no one is ever “out of reach.”
